What is this appointment?

A Yearly Skin Exam is an in-clinic visit with a specially trained Tia primary care provider to check your skin from head to toe, spot any changes early, and support your long-term skin health.

Who should get a Yearly Skin Exam?

A Yearly Skin Exam is for anyone who wants to take care of their skin and catch changes early. Regular checks are one of the best ways to prevent skin cancer from going undetected. This visit may be especially important if you:

  • Have fair skin, freckles, or a history of sunburns or tanning
  • Notice new or changing moles, spots, or patches on your skin
  • Have a family history of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma or precancerous growths
  • Spend a lot of time outdoors or have high sun exposure

Symptoms we care for:

During your Yearly Skin Exam, your provider will pay close attention to skin changes such as:

  • New or unusual moles, spots, or patches
  • Growths that are changing in size, shape, or color
  • Lesions that are itchy, painful, bleeding, or not healing
  • Rough, scaly patches (which can be precancerous)

How the Yearly Skin Exam can help:

  • Early detection: Spot skin changes early, when they’re easiest to treat
  • Comprehensive evaluation: Receive a thorough, head-to-toe exam from a trained provider
  • Personalized guidance: Learn how to protect your skin and check for changes at home
  • Next steps if needed: Access follow-up care, such as a biopsy or dermatologist referral

Your Yearly Skin Exam: What to Expect

Step 1

Arrive for your in-clinic exam with a Tia primary care provider (MD, NP, or PA).

Step 2

Get a thorough head-to-toe skin check - including scalp, face, neck, arms, chest, back, abdomen, legs, feet, and even between your toes. If your provider finds anything they want to get more information about, they may recommend a biopsy (sometimes done on the spot) or a referral to a dermatologist.

Step 3

Leave with personalized education on self-checks and skin protection. Plan to return yearly (or sooner if you notice new or changing spots).

Insurance and Pricing

Is this covered by insurance?

Tia will submit this visit to your insurance.

It’s important to know that many plans don’t treat yearly skin exams as preventive care unless you have a specific concern. When that happens, the visit is billed like a regular office visit — which may mean a copay or some out-of-pocket costs depending on your plan.

We recommend checking your specific benefits ahead of your visit.

FAQs

Will I be seeing a board-certified dermatologist for my Yearly Skin Exam?

No, you will be seeing a Tia primary care provider (a Nurse Practitioner, Physician's Assistant, or Doctor) who has received specialized training in dermatology. They are equipped to handle many skin concerns. If your condition requires the care of a board-certified dermatologist, our team will provide a referral.

Who should get a yearly skin exam?

A yearly skin exam is a proactive way to protect your skin health. It’s particularly important if you have fair skin, a history of sunburns or tanning, many or changing moles, or a family history of skin cancer.

If you have a personal history of skin cancer, we recommend scheduling your ongoing skin checks with a dermatologist rather than with a Tia primary care provider.

How do I know if this will be covered by my insurance?

You can use your insurance for this visit. However, some insurance plans may not cover an yearly skin exam as preventive care. This means you may need to pay a copay or other out-of-pocket costs. We recommend calling your insurance to confirm whether they cover a full-body skin exam as a preventive service.
