What are genital sores?
Female genital sores refer to bumps and lesions that appear in or around the vagina or vulva. They can be caused by various factors, including an infected scratch, a sexually transmitted infection (STI), or a chronic skin condition. The symptoms of female genital sores can range from itchiness, pain, tenderness, and discharge to no symptoms at all.
When to see a doctor abour your genital sores
Schedule a visit with a Tia provider for evaluation if you have:
- Pain or itching around the genitals
- Small bumps or blisters around the genitals, anus or mouth
- Painful ulcers that form when blisters rupture and ooze or bleed
- Scabs that form as the ulcers heal
- Painful urination
- Discharge from the urethra, the tube that releases urine from the body
- Changes in vaginal discharge
What to expect during your appointment
This in-clinic visit will usually include a physical exam and possible STI testing depending on symptoms. Some conditions like genital warts can be treated in the clinic by a provider.
Potential treatment plans for genital warts
Treatment options for genital warts include medications and surgical procedures depending on the severity and location of the warts. Your Tia provider will provide a perscription medication that can be applied at home. Your provider might recommend a referral for surgical procedures such as cryotherapy, electrocautery, and surgical excision may be recommended for internal warts or warts that do not respond to medication.

How can you prevent genital warts?
The surest way to prevent the spreading of HPV and genital warts is to not have sex -- we know, not realistic. So if you are sexually active, there are steps you can take to protect yourself from contracting it HPV and gential warts:
- Use a condom for vaginal, anal and oral sex.
- The HPV vaccination will reduce your risk of getting HPV virus which causes warts.
- Don't douche.
- Ensure regular testing if you have multiple sexual partners.
- Or be monogomouse with one sexual partner at a time.
