What is Acne Injection?

Acne injection is a quick, in-clinic treatment for deep, painful cystic breakouts. A small dose of Kenalog, an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, is injected directly into the blemish to help calm inflammation and speed up healing.

The treatment can be used for cysts and nodules on both the face and body, with redness, swelling, and tenderness often beginning to improve within 24 to 48 hours.

Who should get Acne Injection?

An acne injection is best for an occasional deep, painful breakout that sits beneath the skin, especially cysts or nodules that do not come to a head.

It may be a good option if you want to:

  • Quickly calm a painful or inflamed cyst
  • Reduce swelling, redness, and tenderness
  • Treat a deep breakout on the face or body
  • Help the spot heal faster and reduce the chance of scarring

If you’re experiencing recurring breakouts or want a longer-term acne treatment plan, book an Acne, Rash, or Skin Change appointment instead.

Who delivers this care?

Tia uses specialty trained licensed advanced practice clinicians (NPs & PAs) to deliver this care.

Where on the body can I get an injection?

We can treat deep, painful cysts on both the face and the body. If you have multiple cysts, let your provider know so we can plan the safest approach.

How quickly can I expect to see results?

You can expect the redness, swelling, and tenderness start to calm within 24 hours, with the bump flattening out over the next 48–72 hours. Full healing (and fading of any residual discoloration) can take a week or more, but the “wow, that’s so much better” moment typically arrives in just a day or two.

I’m not exactly sure what I need. How will my Care Plan be formulated?

How you address your skin care goals is a deeply personal choice. Your Tia provider is here to thoroughly understand your objectives and preferences, and take your whole health into account when considering results. At the start of every visit, you and your provider will align on your goals and your treatment plan, with you always in the driver’s seat.

Do I have to be a Tia member to receive an acne injection?

Yes, this service is available to members only at this time.

Can I use insurance for acne injections?

This is a cosmetic service and therefore not covered by insurance. For more details on cost, see our Service List.

How often can I use an acne injection to treat the same area?

We recommend giving the spot at least two weeks to settle before returning for another injection. And, we wouldn’t recommend treating the same area more than 3 times in a 6 week period, as that can increase the risk for pigment changes and atrophy at the injection site. If you continue to experience concerns, we recommend booking an Acne visit at Tia to for Acne diagnosis and treatment.

Can I treat acne breakouts in this visit?

This Acne Injection visit is intended to provide cosmetic and symptomatic relief for a cystic acne blemish. For routine acne diagnosis and treatment, please book an Acne visit.

Can a steroid injection be used for other skin care concerns, such as scars or keloids?

In some cases, steroid injections can help flatten hypertrophic scars and keloids.. Talk with your provider to see whether this treatment is appropriate for your specific concern.

Does the injection hurt?

You’ll feel a quick pinch, similar to a flu shot, plus a few seconds of pressure. Most people say it’s over before they can finish a deep breath.

Are there side effects?

Minor redness or tenderness is common for a day. Rarely, treating the exact same spot too often can cause a small “dip” or pigmentation changes, this is why it’s important to not inject the same area too frequently.

What our patients say about Tia

Jessica O., Tia Patient
"I cannot tell you how much I truly valued my experience here at this clinic. From the minute I walked in, I felt safe, comfortable and welcomed. The exam room had so many amenities to make you feel at home, I have a hard time calling it a "exam room" - they had amazing robes to wear, drinks/snacks just in case, and even a little sitting area in the room. My nurse was the most incredible woman and held my hand throughout the exam...everything was just perfect. I highly recommend Tia to every woman who wants to have a better doctor experience. This is unlike anything I have experienced and will be recommending every woman I know to Tia!"
Stephanie S., Tia Patient
"It's always easy and I've never felt so taken care of in my life! I actually don't dread making appointments and I don't have to put on armor when I go see my doctor. It's a game changer!"
Katherine E. Tia Patient
"I can’t recommend Tia enough. As a woman who doesn’t like going to the doctor (white coat syndrome) and has been discounted and not listened to by doctors in the past, this experience is everything a doctors appt should be. I am so happy I am now a Tia patient and would highly recommend Tia to any female friend or family member that could benefit from the amazing staff and care here 💕"
Whitney K., Tia Patient
"I’ve never experienced such personalized, sensitive, thorough, and holistic women’s healthcare in my life. So grateful for this clinic!"
