The Making Of
The secret behind creating our healing spaces | The Tia Take
The Making Of: A sneak peak behind our newest clinic and how we're designing physical spaces for a new normal
The needs of our physical spaces have changed - our clinics first and foremost need to be safe for both our patients and our providers. But we aren't willing to sacrifice our 'special sauce,' moments of delight that energize our clinics and put the soul back in medicine. With #TheMakingOf our second clinic in L.A., the challenge was to find the just-right balance of high-function and form.

The Set Up: how we got here
Pre-Covid, 100% of everything we did at Tia took place in our physical clinics, from exams to events. Then the world changed, and we did too. The rise of virtual care made us question the future of our IRL clinics…spoiler alert, we think physical spaces are still key to care. Saying no to virtual-only meant figuring out how to heal our physical spaces by asking:
- How does a waiting room work with social distancing?
Asking from 6-feet away...
- How do we create moments of delight within our spaces when we’re all hyper-focused on the less sexy stuff, like sanitizer, safety procedures, and all the Covid protocols?
Think: boldly-colored waiting area and lush gardens!
- How do we design our spaces to meet the distinct needs of our providers working day in and day out on the frontlines to serve *you* !?
Yes, doctors and nurses deserve human-centric design, too!
- How do we incorporate your feedback into everything we do...
Meet the Makers: the people behind our process, who help us make progress
"Healing to me means working towards getting back to the space and place where I feel inspired, strong, and energized. It’s not only a physical process, but a mental and emotional one as well." - Read our full interview with Alda here!
Design By the Numbers
Our design process starts by asking questions - a lot of them. From there we look to you and our team of amazing architects and designers to help shape our process and progress. While it’s hard to keep track of all the decisions (and Slack messages) that go into a single space, we thought we’d show you a few of the numbers that stood out in Tia, LA.
"Co-creation was HUGE part of building the NY clinic. We asked our community so many questions from “where do you put your underwear” (hint: they had no idea where to put it) to how do you want your provider to engage with you during your appointment." - Allie Ball, Head of Design
The Making Of: our in-clinic mural
A picture says a thousand words, and for us a simple, “hi” isn’t enough. Take our NYC space where you’re greeted by: the wonderfully bold, Alexa Proba. Now, that we’ve moved to LA, we’ve created a mural that will sit behind our front desk and greet you each time you’re in our clinic. Here’s how we made it together:
In NYC we developed a program that treats our walls like gallery space for artists, where they are free to hang their work, host an opening, and we invited our community to join. We’ve worked with Marliegh Culver and Simone Noronha, and are excited to bring in more work and creativity over the next year. But we need your help!

Breakout Session: how can plants help us get and stay well?
We love how greenery feels and makes a space come alive. But with our newest clinic in LA, we went beyond picking out plants, and dove deep into the principles of
Biophilic design considers how humans connect with nature in physical spaces. More than pure aesthetics, it offers proven health benefits like stress reduction and improved cognitive functioning.
