What is emergency contraception?
Emergency contraception refers to any method that prevents pregnancy from occurring after unprotected intercourse. The sooner it's used, the better it works. It's recommended to use within 5 days. Some forms of emergency contraception, like the Plan B pill are available over the counter while other methods require a prescription or an in-person visit at the Tia clinic. It's important to note that emergency contraception prevents pregnancy it is not a termination of an established pregnancy.
What to expect during an emergency contraception appointment
This is a consultation based visit to discuss your need for emergency contraception, review the options and determine the right for you. This visit can be conducted in person or virtually and does not require any physical exam or lab work.
Emergency contraception: potential treatment plans
There are two kinds of emergency contraception:
- IUD: You can get certain IUDs within 120 hours (five days) after having unprotected sex. This is the most effective type of emergency contraception. These IUDs work just as effectively on day 1 as on day 5.
- Emergency contraception pill: Take an emergency contraception pill (AKA the morning-after pill) within 120 hours (5 days) after having unprotected sex. These pills are more effective the sooner hey are taken after unprotected sex.
