Potential causes of cramps or pelvic pain

Pelvic pain can originate from the digestive, reproductive, or urinary systems, as well as the muscles or ligaments in the hips or pelvic floor. Some of the common causes of pelvic pain in women include STI, bladder infections (UTI), kidney infections, pregnancy or miscarriage, menstrual related pain, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, GI concerns like IBS, constipation, diarrhea and appendicitis.

When should you see a doctor for cramps or pelvic pain?

If you're experience severe discomfort or new symptoms, it is recommended to schedule an appointment with your Tia Clinic. Common pelvic pain associated symptoms include:

  • Vaginal bleeding, spotting or discharge
  • Menstrual pain
  • Dysuria (painful urination)
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Bloating or gas
  • Rectal bleeding / bleeding with bowel movements
  • Pain during sex
  • Fever or chills
  • Pain in your groin area

What to expect during your appointment

In order to identify the cause of pelvic pain, your provider will first review your symptoms and medical history. A physical exam may also be conducted, and additional tests may be ordered to determine the underlying cause of the pain. These tests may include ultrasound, blood and urine tests.

Potential treatment plans for cramps or pelvic pain

The treatment of pelvic pain depends on underlying diagnosis and factors such as the intensity, and frequency of pain. Common treatments can include:

  • Your provider will write you a prescription, or over-the-counter medicine might be available depending on the diagnosis.
  • Hormonal medication like birth control
  • Acupuncture to help ease symptoms
  • Lifestyle changes like exercise, stretching or physical therapy
  • If the pain results from an issue with one of your pelvic organs, the treatment might involve surgery or other procedures.
