Genetics Clinic FAQ

Welcome to Tia! We’re excited to support you through your genetics care journey. Below are answers to common questions about genetics appointments at Tia, including testing and results review.

What is genetic counseling, and what can I expect in this appointment?

During your appointment, your genetic counselor will review your personal and family history and discuss whether genetic testing is appropriate for you. Please be prepared to review details of your personal and extended family medical history. If testing is recommended, it will be performed by an external lab that specializes in genetic testing. Based on your personal and family medical history and desire for information we will review possible next steps, including testing options, sample collection methods, and personalized recommendations for screening and risk reduction based on your results, if applicable. Follow up genetic counseling appointments may be but are not always indicated.

Where do I get the testing done?

If genetic testing is indicated and you would like to move forward with it, appropriate options will be reviewed. Genetic testing is performed by an external lab, not by Tia.. During your appointment, your genetic counselor will guide you on the next steps, including sample collection options such as in-clinic or at-home testing kits if testing is recommended.

How much will the appointment cost?

Appointment costs depend on your insurance plan and coverage. If you are paying out of pocket, our team will provide pricing details ahead of time. Please contact your insurance company with any questions about coverage for genetic testing as plans have varying criteria for coverage.

Is this appointment considered preventive by my insurance? Is this part of my preventive coverage?

Genetic counseling appointments and genetic testing coverage depend on your specific insurance policy. While appointments may be covered by your insurance they are typically not covered as preventative care. We recommend checking with your insurance provider for detailed coverage information.

Do I need prior approval from insurance for testing?

Some genetic tests may require prior authorization from your insurance provider.

Depending on the testing ordering the cost and coverage can vary considerably. The genetic testing companies Tia uses have teams that will support you with all billing needs including prior authorization and payment estimates. Please contact your insurance company with any questions about coverage for genetic testing as plans have varying criteria for coverage.

If your testing is ordered through the company Natera, their contact information is below. Please contact them with questions about cost and coverage of genetic testing. They can be contacted at 650.489.9050 or signaterapc@natera.com. If you are having testing through another company, please reach out to your care team for more information on how to contact the testing lab’s billing team for support as needed.

How much will the testing cost?

The cost of genetic testing varies depending on the type of test ordered and your insurance coverage. Tia does not perform the testing directly and thus does not bill for the testing- the performing lab is responsible for the billing.

The genetic testing company may have a cash pay option to limit cost and the company can discuss that with you directly as it specifically applies to your situation. If genetic testing is billed to insurance and not covered, or if you have a high deductible plan, testing may be expensive. Please contact your insurance provider for your testing benefits and contact the lab for cost estimates.

If your testing was performed by the company Natera you can find their billing information here: https://www.natera.com/womens-health/pricing-billing/

Are my genetic test results protected from insurance or employers?

Your genetic information is protected by the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). This federal law prohibits health insurance companies and employers from discriminating against individuals based on their genetic information. However, GINA does not apply to life insurance, disability insurance, or long-term care insurance. We recommend reviewing your specific insurance policies for more details.
