Letter from the Founders
Letter to our Community: Post-Roe America
To our community,
The day has finally come that we’d hoped never to see: the end of Roe.
The Supreme Court’s decision today to overturn Roe v. Wade and end the constitutional right to abortion is a devastating setback for health, equity, and human rights. We know that when abortion is restricted, it doesn’t go away — it goes underground, putting women’s lives at risk and exacerbating cycles of poverty, disproportionately impacting low-income women and women of color.
While deeply saddened by this news, we’re also not surprised. Tia’s been preparing for some time for a post-Roe America, firmly rooted in our belief that abortion is healthcare, period. So despite our heavy hearts, we’re ready. We’re ready to do our part to continue to support you — our members — with access to medication abortion via our virtual care team in California and New York, where it remains legal, and via a local partner on-the-ground in Arizona, where we’ll continue to monitor local laws closely. And, we’re ready to contribute to a broader national conversation about where we go from here and how we improve access and quality by integrating medication abortion into women’s comprehensive primary care, which is more important than ever in a post-Roe America.
Here are the steps we’ve taken already and will continue to take on behalf of our community:
- In April, we expanded Tia’s scope of practice to offer medication abortion via our virtual care team in states where we operate and its permitted by law, which continue to be California and New York.
- In Arizona, we’re continuing to partner closely with a local abortion provider on the ground to ensure access to high-quality care for our patients, within the confines of local laws. We’re monitoring the situation in Arizona closely and will need to adapt our approach if and when state laws change.
- As we look to the future, we’re advocating for medication abortion to become a “standard of care” that all primary and virtual care providers can and should provide. Tia will also continue to model a new way forward for comprehensive women’s healthcare — not a single issue or a reproductive organ, but whole person healthcare that is inclusive of but not limited to abortion.
Today isn’t about politics or religious beliefs. It’s about how we can channel the heaviness into action and move forward, together. Let’s move forward together with a commitment to reimagining abortion as part of whole women’s healthcare.
Yours in solidarity,
Carolyn Witte
