When menopause sets in, your body stops producing estrogen - which is the main sex hormone in women. This can lead to menopausal symptoms, which can be uncomfortable. Before you reach menopause, you may experience a period of perimenopause during which your estrogen levels can fluctuate. Remember, menopause is a normal phase of life, and there are ways to manage any symptoms you may experience.

When should you see a doctor regarding symptoms of menopause?

Not everyone needs to see a provider for menopause. Menopause is a natural process just like when menstruating people have their first period. It is recommended to schedule a visits to discuss menopause if you are experiencing frequent and bothersome symptoms which may include:

  • Irregular periods
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Brain fog
  • Painful sex
  • Night sweats
  • Hot flashes
  • Sleep changes
  • Mood changes
  • Weight changes

It is also important to schedule an evaluation if you notice any vaginal bleeding after 12 consecutive months of no bleeding.

What do expect during a menopause & perimenopause assessment

At Tia, this is a consultation based visit to review your medical and medication history, pregnancy history, menstrual history and current symptoms. Your provider will also review your risks and recommended preventative health screening based on age. This visit does not usually include a physical exam but may include orders for additional testing like blood work and imaging.

Potential treatment plans

Depending on diagnosis, treatment plans for menopause & perimenopause can vary. Your provider might recommend:

  • Lifestyle recommendations like diet and exercise
  • Prescription medication including but not limited to low dose SSRI (antidepressants), hormone replacement therapy and symptoms specific treatment (hot flashes, vaginal dryness)
  • Recommendations for age based preventative health screening
  • Acupuncture
