What is a Contraception Consult? What is it for?

This is a non-exam appointment where your medical history, medication, period history, and goals for contraception will be reviewed. The outcome of this visit may be a prescription for different birth control options such as the

pill, patch, ring, shot, implant or IUD. You may choose to visit for a variety of reasons including renewing a prescription for birth control you are currently taking, switching to a different type of birth control, or to obtain emergency contraception. Learning about your options when it comes to contraception is the first step in making empowering and educated decisions about your healthcare.

When should you book a Contraception Consult appointment?

If you have never taken birth control before(or simply took a break from taking it), there are several reasons and symptoms that might make you a good candidate for contraception:

  • Pregnancy prevention
  • Irregular periods
  • Heavy or painful periods
  • Missed or skipped periods
  • Managing the symptoms of PCOS, like acne or hair growth

Additionally, if you are in need of a refill of your current birth control perscription, we recommend booking a consult appointment first. This will allow your providers to carefully evaluate your experience taking your current form of contraception. Additionally, if you're interested in switching methods of birth control, a Contraception Consult appointment will give you the space to discuss the current symptoms you're experiencing and concerns you might have. Your provider will equip you with the knowledge on all birth control options that are right for you, so that you can make an informed decision.

What to expect during your appointment

Whether in-person or virtual, the main purpose of this visit is to consult with a provider. The provider will go through your medical history, period history, medication history, and contraception goals. You will also have a discussion about the pros, cons, and effectiveness of each option, as well as the potential risks or side effects. Based on this information, your provider will suggest the best type of contraception for you. During an in-person birth control counseling visit, you typically won't need a pelvic exam.

What are the potential treatment outcomes?

Potential treatment plans will vary based on the form of contraception you choose. If you are seeking emergency contraception, pills, patches, the ring, or a depo shot, you can expect a same day perscription. For IUDs or the Nexaplnanon Implant, you will need to return to Tia for a separate placement visit. Your Care Coordinators will support you in setting up this appointment. If a non-hormonal form of birth control feels right for you, your provider will give you instructions on different options such as cycle tracking, basal body temperature, or cervical mucus monitoring.
